Netflix to release epic fantasy drama ‘Asadal Chronicles’ starring Song Joong-ki

Just a week after saying that it will launch two upcoming Korean dramas in May, Netflix has officially announced on April 29 that it will bring another Korean series to its subscribers worldwide. The new series is the epic fantasy drama Asadal Chronicles starring Song Joong-ki, Jang Dong-gun, and Kim Ji-won.

Netflix will release the drama globally in early June, giving it the official English title Arthdal Chronicles. There are no given exact dates of release in each geographic region yet but most likely the series will air almost simultaneously on the service and cable network tvN, with each episode expected to be released in Asia just one hour after its original broadcast in Korea.

Asadal Chronicles follows the adventure of mythical heroes in ancient times, focusing on the events that revolve around the birth of civilization and nations in a fictional land called Arth. Its central setting is the city of Arthdal, and the unity and love of people who live in this place take center stage in the most important plots of the drama. The title of the series is based on the mythical capital city of Gojoseon in Korean mythology.

Song Joong-ki (Descendants of the Sun) plays the the role of Eunseom, a character who relentlessly fights to protect his own tribe. He may look innocent, but he does not hesitate to be aggressive when it comes to protecting his tribe from foreign enemies. Meanwhile, Jang Dong-gun (Suits) plays Tagon, son of the leader of Saenyeok Tribe. Although very charismatic and talented, Tagon is so dangerous because he conceals his true feelings so deeply that no one knows when he will burst with anger and rage.

Kim Ji-won (Fight For My Way) and Kim Ok-bin (Children of a Lesser God) complete the main cast as Tanya and Taealha, respectively. Tanya is the successor of Wahan Tribe who realizes her destiny to lead and protect her own people while Taealha is described as the most beautiful lady in Arthdal and someone who has the strongest desire for power.

Asadal Chronicles is directed by Kim Won-seok, the PD of critically acclaimed dramas My AjusshiSignal, and Misaeng. It is penned by Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon, the two award-winning screenwriters of Tree With Deep Roots and Queen Seondeok. Kim is also known for the mega-hit historical drama Jewel In The Palace.
